Margot Robbie: ‘I’ve Been Preparing For This Role My Entire Life’
Winsome Walker   March 19, 2018   Home Press Archive

Article from Marie Claire

Margot Robbie learnt to fight (in heels) for Suicide Squad and skated five times a week for her Oscar-nominated performance in the gusty biopic I, Tonya.

The 27-year-old jokes that the preparation for her latest flick—the charming animation Peter Rabbit—has taken an entire lifetime. Robbie is the middle child in her family and now voices rabbit Flopsy, the middle child of triplets.

“I very much relate because Flopsy’s one of four—I was one of four,” she tells marie claire at the film’s premiere in Sydney on Saturday. “They are very close with their cousin, and I was very close with my cousin. And I was the middle child, and Flopsy also suffers from a bit of middle-child-syndrome. So I’ve really been preparing for this role my entire life.”

On the green carpet, Robbie stunned in a classic Chanel navy jacket and mini—despite the 35-degree heat. Last month, Jennifer Lawrence defended her right to wear a plunging Versace dress on a freezing London day (while her male co-stars rugged up) after many called her a victim of sexism.

“It is boiling, I’m in the reverse situation. I wonder if people will give me a hard time,” Robbie says.

“There are some things I probably wouldn’t do for fashion, there’s probably a line there. But wearing a dress that someone spent hundreds of hours making for you—if someone did that for me—I would definitely wear it on the red carpet despite the temperatures, even for a couple of minutes.”

Peter Rabbit was largely filmed in Sydney (you’ll spot Centennial Park), but Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki (Mopsy), Daisy Ridley (Cotton Tail) and James Corden recorded their voice work in Los Angeles. Robbie says the international press tour has been an opportunity to bond with her co-stars, especially Debicki.

“Oh my God, it’s so great, we got to do all of our interviews together yesterday, and back in LA we all got to hang out,” she tells marie claire. “I love the community of making a movie, so it’s nice to be with everyone again.”

And while she’s known for her hilarious antics—including reportedly inviting her Uber driver to a house party—Robbie reveals the Peter Rabbit celebrations have been low-key so far.

“We had a dinner last night and had a few drinks, but we have this today, so we kept it tame,” she says.

For her next role, Robbie is swapping Beatrix Potter for Quentin Tarantino and will play murdered actress Sharon Tate in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. She’ll star alongside Brad Pitt, and will be reunited with her The Wolf of Wall Street co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.

Asked why she’s excited to play the highly-sought after part, Robbie says she’s still dealing with the news.

“Well, I only got the offer in like two days ago, so it hasn’t really sunk in yet and I haven’t really wrapped my head around it,” she reveals.

“But I’ll let you know in future.”
